Using a custom domain like shop.mycustomdomain.net? Use these steps »

Use www

To get your custom domain up and running with your Big Cartel store, you’ll want to create a CNAME record to point to your shop and then simply forward the non-www version of your custom domain to the www version using a 301 redirect. Here’s how you’ll get that going:

  1. Log in to your 123-reg account »
  2. Click Control Panel Home. Select the domain that you’d like to use from the Your Domain list and then click Manage.
  3. Scroll down to the Advanced Domain Settings section and click Manage DNS.
  4. Delete the www A record DNS entry. Then add a new www DNS entry, select CNAME for the type, and enter mybigcartelstore.bigcartel.com (be sure to replace the mybigcartelstore placeholder with your actual store’s subdomain) and then click Add.
  5. Click Back to return to the Domain Basics page.
  6. Now you’ll want to select Web Forwarding and next to your domain name, click Add to forward your domain.
  7. Make sure the Permanent Forwarding tab is selected. In the Forward to field, enter www.mycustomdomain.net (be sure to include the www and swap the mycustomdomain.net portion of the example with your actual custom domain name) and then click Confirm.
  8. Finally, you’ll head over to Settings > Domains in your store’s admin and find the Custom domain field. Enter www.mycustomdomain.net (be sure to update that example placeholder with your actual custom domain name) and click Save.

That’s it! Now we wait. It can take up to 24-48 hours for domain changes to update.

123reg also provides some more instructions on creating CNAME records and 301 redirects if you’re having trouble locating where to make those changes. If it’s still not working after that, you should contact 123-reg to help you figure out why.

Make sure you don’t enable any masking on your 301 redirect. Masked redirects will end up preventing your store from working properly for people that access the shop through your custom domain.

Use another subdomain

If you’re planning on using your custom domain to display content other than just your Big Cartel store, you’ll want to create a CNAME record on a subdomain that’s not www - like shop.mycustomdomain.net or store.mycustomdomain.net. Here’s how to set that up:

  1. Log in to your 123-reg account »
  2. Click Control Panel Home. Select the domain that you’d like to use from the Your Domain list and then click Manage.
  3. Scroll down to the Advanced Domain Settings section and click Manage DNS.
  4. Add a new DNS entry for your subdomain. For example, enter shop if you’d like your store to appear at shop.mycustomdomain.net.
  5. Select CNAME for the type, and enter mybigcartelstore.bigcartel.com (be sure to update that mybigcartelstore placeholder with your actual store’s subdomain) and then click Add.
  6. Finally, you’ll head over to Settings > Domains in your store’s admin and find the Custom domain field on that page. Enter shop.mycustomdomain.net (be sure to update that example URL with your actual custom domain including your fancy new subdomain you just created) and then click Save.

That’s it! Now we wait. It can take up to 24-48 hours for domain changes to update.
