Use www

To get your custom domain up and running with your Big Cartel store, you’ll want to create a CNAME record to point to your shop and then simply forward the non-www version of your custom domain to the www version using a 301 redirect. Here’s how you’ll get that going:

  1. Log in to your Bluehost account »
  2. In the top menu, click on Domains.
  3. Then click Zone Editor in the second menu.
  4. Scroll down to the Add DNS Record section. In the Host Record field, enter the subdomain: www
  5. In the Points to drop down, select CNAME. And in the Points to field, enter mybigcartelstore.bigcartel.com (be sure to swap that mybigcartelstore placeholder with your actual store’s subdomain) and click Add Record.
  6. Next, select Redirect in the second menu bar.
  7. Click Permanent (301). In the http drop down, select your domain. In the redirects to field, enter www.mycustomdomain.net (be sure to include the www and update that mycustomdomain.net placeholder with your actual custom domain name) and click do not redirect www, and then click Add this Redirect.
  8. Finally, you’ll head over to Settings > Domains in your store’s admin and find the Custom domain field. Enter www.mycustomdomain.net (be sure to update that example placeholder with your actual custom domain name) and click Save.

That’s it! Now we wait. It can take up to 24-48 hours for domain changes to update.

Bluehost also provides some more instructions on creating CNAME records and 301 redirects if you’re having trouble locating where to make those changes. If it’s still not working after that, you should contact Bluehost to help you figure out why.

Make sure you don’t enable any masking on your 301 redirect. Masked redirects will end up preventing your store from working properly for people that access the shop through your custom domain.

Use another subdomain

If you’re planning on using your custom domain to display content other than just your Big Cartel store, you’ll want to create a CNAME record on a subdomain that’s not www - like shop.mycustomdomain.net or store.mycustomdomain.net. Here’s how to set that up:

  1. Log in to your Bluehost account »
  2. In the top menu, click on Domains.
  3. Then click Zone Editor in the second menu.
  4. Scroll down to the Add DNS Record section. In the Host Record field, enter the subdomain you want to use (ex: shop)
  5. In the Points to drop down, select CNAME. And in the Points to field, enter mybigcartelstore.bigcartel.com (be sure to swap the mybigcartelstore placeholder with your actual store’s subdomain) and click Add Record.
  6. Finally, you’ll head over to Settings > Domains in your store’s admin and find the Custom domain field. Enter shop.mycustomdomain.net (be sure to update that example placeholder with your actual custom domain name including the fancy new subdomain you just created) and click Save.

That’s it! Now we wait. It can take up to 24-48 hours for domain changes to update.
