Using a custom domain like shop.mycustomdomain.net? Use these steps »

Use www

To get your custom domain up and running with your Big Cartel store, you’ll want to create a CNAME record to point to your shop and then simply forward the non-www version of your custom domain to the www version using a 301 redirect. Here’s how you’ll get that going:

  1. Log in to your GoDaddy account »
  2. Next to Domains, click Manage.
  3. You’ll see two view options in the top right corner - Card View or List View. Choose the List View icon and click on the domain name you’re planning to use with your shop.
  4. Select the DNS Zone File tab and scroll down to the CNAME section.
  5. Click the pencil icon to edit the www record and change the @ symbol in the value field so it now says mybigcartelstore.bigcartel.com (be sure to replace mybigcartelstore with your actual store’s subdomain).
  6. Click Finish and then scroll up and click Save Changes within the red toolbar that appears near the top.
  7. Click the Settings tab, scroll down to the Forwarding section, and click Add.
  8. Select http:// as your Forward to option and enter www.mycustomdomain.net as the destination (be sure to include the www in there and replace mycustomdomain.net with your actual custom domain name).
  9. Set the Redirect type to 301 (Permanent) and the Forward Setting to Forward Only, and click Add.
  10. Finally, you’ll head over to Settings > Domains within your Big Cartel store’s admin and enter www.mycustomdomain.net into the Custom domain field (be sure to replace mycustomdomain.net with your actual custom domain name) and click Save.

That’s it! Now we wait. It can take up to 24-48 hours for domain changes to update.

GoDaddy also provides some more instructions on creating CNAME records and 301 redirects if you’re having trouble locating where to make those changes. If it’s still not working after that, you should contact GoDaddy to help you figure out why.

Make sure you don’t enable any masking on your 301 redirect. Masked redirects will end up preventing your store from working properly for people that access the shop through your custom domain.

Use another subdomain

If you’re planning on using your custom domain to display content other than just your Big Cartel store, you’ll want to create a CNAME record on a subdomain that’s not www - like shop.mycustomdomain.net or store.mycustomdomain.net. Here’s how you’ll get that going:

  1. Log in to your GoDaddy account »
  2. Next to Domains, click Manage.
  3. Select the list view icon in the upper right corner and then click on the domain name you want to modify.
  4. Click the DNS Zone File tab and scroll down to the CNAME section.
  5. Click Add Record, set the Record Type to CNAME and in the Alias Name field, enter the subdomain you’d like to use for your store - like shop or store, for example.
  6. In the Points to field, enter mybigcartelstore.bigcartel.com (be sure to replace mybigcartelstore with your actual store’s subdomain)
  7. Click Finish and then be sure scroll up and click Save Changes in the red toolbar that appears at the top.
  8. Finally, you’ll head over to Settings > Domains in your Big Cartel store’s admin and in the Custom domain field, you’ll enter shop.mycustomdomain.net (be sure to replace with your actual custom domain, including the fancy new subdomain you just created)

That’s it! Now we wait. It can take up to 24-48 hours for domain changes to update.
