Using a custom domain like shop.example.com? Use these steps »

Use www

To get your custom domain up and running with your Big Cartel shop, you’ll want to create a CNAME record to point to your shop’s bigcartel.com URL, and then simply forward the non-www version of your custom domain to the www version using a 301 redirect. Here’s how:

  1. For Bluehost, you’ll need to sign up for web hosting in addition to purchasing your domain.
  2. Log in to your Bluehost account »
  3. In the side menu, click on Domains, then click My Domains.
  4. From the dropdown labeled Manage, to the right of your custom domain, click DNS.
  5. Scroll down to the CNAME section, and click to add a record. In the Host Record field enter www, and in the Points to field enter your shop’s full bigcartel.com URL, then choose 1 day from the TTL dropdown. Lastly, click Save.
  6. Next, select Redirect in the side menu under Domains, and click the Create redirect button.
  7. From the Original domain drop down select your domain, and leave the Directory blank. In the Target domain field, enter your full custom domain with the www in front, and be sure that Permanent 301 is selected as Type. Toggle WWW from blue to grey, and leave the Wildcard toggle grey. Lastly, click Create.
  8. Finally, you’ll head to Account > Edit your shop info > Add a custom domain in your Big Cartel admin. Click Add domain.
  9. In the Custom domain field enter your full custom domain with the www in front, and click Save.

That’s it! Now we wait. It can take up to 24-48 hours for domain changes to update.

Bluehost also provides some more instructions on creating CNAME records and 301 redirects if you’re having trouble locating where to make those changes. If it’s still not working after that, you should contact Bluehost to help you figure out why.

Use another subdomain

If you’re already using your custom domain on another site or page, then you’ll want to create a CNAME record on a subdomain that’s not www - like shop.example.com or store.example.com. Here’s how to set that up:

In the Host Record field enter the subdomain you’d like to use (shop, store, etc.), and in the Points to field enter your shop’s full bigcartel.com URL, then choose 1 day from the TTL dropdown. Lastly, click Save.
  6. Finally, you’ll head to Account > Edit your shop info > Add a custom domain in your Big Cartel admin. Click Add domain.
  7. In the Custom domain field enter your subdomain (shop.example.com or store.example.com, for example), and click Save.

That’s it! Now we wait. It can take up to 24-48 hours for domain changes to update.
