Use www

Crazy Domains requires that you have Premium DNS to set up web forwarding, so be sure you’ve got Premium DNS in your Crazy Domains account before proceeding with the instructions below.

To get your custom domain up and running with your Big Cartel shop, you’ll want to create a CNAME record to point to your shop’s bigcartel.com URL, and then simply forward the non-www version of your custom domain to the www version using a 301 redirect. Here’s how:

  1. For Crazy Domains, you’ll need to sign up for web hosting in addition to purchasing your domain.
  2. Log in to your Crazy Domains hosting manager »
  3. Open the Domains tab and then click on the domain you’d like to use for your shop.
  4. Scroll down to the DNS Settings section. Look for any existing records for the www version (www.example.com) of your domain. If you see an A record for the www, you’ll want to delete that record. If you see a CNAME record for the www, you’ll want to modify that record. If you don’t see any records for the www, click the menu on the DNS Settings bar and click the Add record button.
  5. Whether you are adding or editing a record, you’ll want to make sure to select the CNAME option. You’ll then enter www in the Sub Domain field next to your custom URL. Then you’ll enter your shop’s full bigcartel.com URL in the Alias For field, and click Update.
  6. Next, click the menu button on the DNS Setting bar again and select Web Forwarding. This time, leave the Sub Domain field blank. Then add your full custom domain with the www in front in the Forward to Domain field. Click Update.
  7. Finally, you’ll head to Account > Edit your shop info > Add a custom domain in your Big Cartel admin. Click Add domain.
  8. In the Custom domain field enter your full custom domain with the www in front, and click Save.

That’s it! Now we wait. It can take up to 24-48 hours for domain changes to update.

Crazy Domains also provides some more instructions on creating CNAME records and 301 redirects if you’re having trouble locating where to make those changes. If it’s still not working after that, you should contact Crazy Domains to help you figure out why.

Make sure you don’t enable any masking on your 301 redirect. Masked redirects will end up preventing your store from working properly for people that access the shop through your custom domain.

Use another subdomain

Premium DNS is not required to create a CNAME, so you can have Standard DNS in your Crazy Domains account if you plan on using another subdomain, like shop.example.com or store.example.com. Here’s how to set that up:

  1. Log in to your Crazy Domains hosting manager »
  2. Open the Domains tab and then click on the domain you’d like to use for your shop, and scroll down to the DNS Settings section. 3.To add a new record, click the menu on the DNS Settings bar and click the Add record button. Select CNAME for the Record type. In the Sub Domain, enter the subdomain that you’d like to forward (shop, store, etc.). Then you’ll enter your shop’s full bigcartel.com URL in the Alias For field, and click Update.
  3. Finally, you’ll head to Account > Edit your shop info > Add a custom domain in your Big Cartel admin. Click Add domain.
  4. In the Custom domain field enter your subdomain (shop.example.com, store.example.com, etc.), and click Save.

That’s it! Now we wait. It can take up to 24-48 hours for domain changes to update.
