Edit your theme code

Premium feature available on paid plans

If there are more in-depth changes you want to make to your design that aren’t included in our built-in theme editor, you’ll need to dig in to your code or hire a designer/developer.

For savvy code conquerers

Most theme HTML is editable within all built-in pages, except for checkout. Big Cartel themes also use Liquid markup as the theme’s language. Check out our tech documentation for the full rundown.

When editing your CSS, it’s best to override existing styles at the bottom of Customize Design > Advanced > CSS instead of editing the code directly, especially if you’re only tweaking certain page elements.

Also, feel free to include custom Javascript, stylesheets, or font files. Just make sure they’re hosted externally, as we don’t offer file hosting.

Have a specific question? Try posting on Stack Overflow or search the Big Cartel tag there for advice.

If you need more help

If none of our built-in themes strike your fancy, but you don’t have any coding experience, you may want to hire some outside help from a designer. We recommend checking out a resource like 99designs to find the right person to design what you need.

  1. Head to the area in your admin.
  2. Click Customize design.
  3. Click the Advanced tab.
  4. Choose the page you want to edit.
  5. Click the Custom button to make changes, or click Default to revert to the page’s original theme code.
  6. When you’re finished, click Done and Save.

Sorry, right now this can only be done on the web.
