If you see an error in your Big Cartel admin stating your PayPal account cannot currently accept payments, don't worry! We've put together troubleshooting steps to help get you back up and running as quickly as possible.

Unfulfilled requirements in your PayPal account

One of the most common reasons payments aren't being processed through your PayPal account is that PayPal has a few more account requirements to use the PayPal Commerce checkout.

  1. Check your primary PayPal email to be sure your account is confirmed.

  2. Make sure your PayPal account is a business account.

  3. Check that your account is verified here.

  4. You can also check for any additional requirements in your PayPal admin. Log in to your PayPal account and then click the Summary tab or bell icon in the top right corner of your dashboard to make sure all verification tasks are complete.

Currency mismatch between Big Cartel admin and PayPal account

Another common issue is that the currency setting in your Big Cartel admin isn't matching up with the currency set in your PayPal account.

  1. Log in to your Big Cartel admin.

  2. Head over to the Account section.

  3. Click Edit your shop info to check your shop's currency.

To check your currency in the PayPal account.

  1. Log in to your PayPal account.

  2. From the Settings dropdown in the top right corner of your admin, click Account Settings.

  3. Select Money, banks and cards and scroll down to Currency management to view the listed currency.

Blocked payments in your PayPal account

You'll also want to make sure there aren't any blocked payment settings in your PayPal account preventing some payments from going through.

  1. Log in to your PayPal account.

  2. From the Settings dropdown in the top right corner of your admin, click Account Settings.

  3. Click Payment Preferences in the side menu and then Update in the Block Payments field to double-check and update those settings if needed.

💡If you've sorted everything on PayPal's end, but you're still seeing the yellow banner in your admin, then you can try disconnecting and reconnecting the checkout-- it can take some time for changes in your PayPal account to fully update, and disconnecting/reconnecting the checkout can prompt that update.

Additional restrictions or limitations on PayPal account

If you’ve run through the above steps and everything looks complete and up-to-date, then there may be another reason why charges have been disabled. There are a number of reasons why PayPal places limitations on accounts.

To find out, your next step will be to reach out to PayPal support directly, since we don’t have access to those details on the Big Cartel side. For the fastest help, log in to your PayPal account and then click the help link in the top right navigation of your PayPal admin. From there, you can reach out to your designated PayPal support via email or phone.
