📦📦📦 Products can vary in size, shape and weight and may have different shipping requirements - we wanted to make it simple to account for those scenarios. In this next phase of shipping improvements, we’ve added product shipping profiles that will override your default rates for any items in your shop that will need to ship in separate package. You can use those product shipping profiles alongside the default shipping profiles to get your shipping rates dialed in just right.
Before we dig in, you’ll want to keep in mind that the ALL of your product shipping profiles will display on the checkout page. So keep it simple, and only use product profiles when you have a product or product option that needs to be shipped in a separate package.
Create your Product Shipping Profiles
Let’s run through an example - say you sell t-shirts, mugs, totes, and posters. Most of your stuff can go into a single box, but posters have to go in tubes. You’ll need to charge a different rate to ship those poster tubes separately, and you definitely can.
Head over to the Account tab in your admin, then click to edit your shipping. Click Add product shipping profile. First thing’s first, you gotta give that profile a name, and “Product Shipping Profile 1” is pretty nondescript. Since we’re working with posters, let’s name that profile “Posters”, then click the + button to add your rates. Next, add your country or zone, like the United States, then add your methods and rates– maybe you want to only offer Standard shipping at $8.00. Save that, and you’ve got your product shipping profile created.
Heads up! When you’re naming your product shipping profiles you’ll want to be descriptive rather than using the generic “Product Shipping Profile 1” that the system assigns. Something like “Posters” or “Framed Prints” will help ensure that you’re assigning the correct products or options to their corresponding shipping profile. And those names will appear on the checkout page’s breakdown– so the clearer your shipping profile names are the better.
đź–Ľ đź‘• Assign Profiles to Products or Options
Now that your product shipping profile is created, youll need to assign that profile to the applicable products or product options. Head to the Products section in your admin and click into one of your posters, scroll down to the Shipping Profile column, and choose Posters. Save your change and voila! - now the checkout page will calculate shipping for your poster, while the rest of your products are calculated based on our shipping default. That is, unless you’ve got more posters. If you do, then click into those product listings, and assign them to the Posters shipping profile too!
đź’µ đź’łView your Overrides on the Checkout page
A couple of things to keep in mind– default rates and the product shipping profiles are separate, so there’s not a way to use both— you can use either the default rates or the product profiles for a given product or option. And all applicable rates will display on the checkout. So if you create five different profiles, and all apply to a product in the customer’s cart, then they’ll have five profiles they have to choose shipping for– again, keep it simple!
